Seeding change in developing countries through digital technologies

The Share Engage Educate (SEE) Project is about knowledge sharing and knowledge building in rural and remote low SES schools in developing countries. We use donated second-hand digital technologies (mainly from QUT) to enhance the quality of teaching and learning across the curriculum. Through outreach projects, QUT students have collaborated in trans-disciplinary teams to showcase the use of technologies in classroom activities aligned with the local curriculum. Apart from transforming e-waste to e-opportunity, this largely unfunded project has to-date paved the way for creating new learning opportunities with technology for more than 10000 children in six countries. In addition, QUT students from Education, IT, Science and Engineering, Design, Creative Industries, and Business disciplines have been challenged to collaborate and in the process design and deliver classroom activities in Fijian and Malaysian classrooms. The research has generated some new ideas and the problems associated with technology integration in developing countries. It has also demonstrated the impact of such engagement on university students. Apart from applying their disciplinary knowledge through the application of 21st-century skills (e.g. critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and communication), these university students have also developed new insights into other cultures and the world they live (an learning experience that is sometimes foreign to STEM disciplines).
