Are the big supermarkets driving food waste?

Centre member A/Professor Bree Hurst was interviewed by ABC’s National Rural Affairs reporter, Nathan Morris on Monday this week, which aired on 13th March.  The article and podcast discuss the power imbalance between farmers and supermarkets causing an oversupply of food resulting in 7.68 million tonnes of waste every year.  According to peak vegetable grower groups, Australia’s supermarket duopoly is making waste worse.

Bree is an expert in social corporate responsibility and leads a Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre project exploring trading practices affecting food waste in Australia, alongside Rowena Macguire and Hope Johnson in the Law School.
