Dr Louis Ferreira, an Associate Professor in Bioengineering, will work with BSRG from April to July 2018. Dr Ferreira holds a joint appointment with the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering and the Department of Surgery at the University of Western Ontario where he directs the Surgical Mechatronics Laboratory. He conducts research in upper extremity biomechanics related to orthopaedic surgical outcomes, with special interest in surgical robotics and computer-navigation, biomechanics transducer design, and virtual simulations and haptics for orthopaedic surgery.
He is working with Professor Peter Pivonka and Dr Ashish Gupta to develop an ex-vivo active shoulder motion simulator, for the application of biomechanics to investigate orthopaedic surgeries such as fracture fixation, soft-tissue repair, and joint replacement. This novel simulator will facilitate collaborative studies among surgeons and engineers, with the guiding principle of engineering-based investigation for the betterment of patient care.
