Nudgeathon 2022 FAQ'S

Should our responses to the challenges factor in any sort of budget?

Wine Australia have stated that they don’t wish for a ‘set budget’ to be a hinderance to the creativity of your proposals and solutions. Please continue to think outside of the box!

One of the teams requested any statistics Wine Australia may have on winery/grower business size and location.

To assist with this query, please see Wine Australia’s attachments and additional information below:

Page 8 of the Vintage Report 2021 gives a summary of the number of wineries by crush size. Page 18 of the SA state summary (2022) gives the number of growers in SA by vineyard size and region. Wine Australia estimates that there are about 5500 growers in Australia, and would speculate anecdotally that the profile is biased a bit more towards smaller growers in the other states. The excel spreadsheet provides the number of winery facilities by region – based on cellar door locations as recorded in the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (2020). It’s likely to underestimate the total number of wineries by around 20%, but it would include most of the larger ones. There are between 1600 and 2000 winemaking businesses in Australia, but it depends how you define such an entity.
