Carla Sangiovanni is a PhD candidate at QUT Faculty of Business and Law. Her research centres around the intricate dynamics between legal, political, and social licences to operate (LLO, PLO, and SLO) within Brazil’s mining sector, focusing on how these frameworks align or conflict with the public interest. Using a contested mining project in Bahia as a case study, Carla investigates the socio-environmental and economic dimensions of mining activities and their impact on local communities.

With a background as a Brazilian lawyer, Carla is dedicated to identifying legal gaps and exploring sustainable mining practices that enhance community well-being and address socio-environmental challenges. Her work integrates interdisciplinary methodologies to provide insights into improving governance and stakeholder engagement in Brazil’s mining industry. Recommendations of her studies include enhancing public participation and considering international conventions to empower communities and ensure transparent decision-making in the Brazilian mining sector.
