This event marks the launch of our ‘accessibility playbook’, Accessible Assessment and Pedagogies: Improving Student Outcomes Through Inclusive Practice. Written in the same plain language and humour as its best-selling sister, Inclusive Education for the 21st Century: Theory, Policy and Practice, this new book explains accessibility and why it matters, while providing robust evidence for change in assessment task sheet design, classroom pedagogy, and Assessment for Learning practices. There are 15 chapters and multiple resources to help educators to improve students’ learning experiences and outcomes, while benefiting from fewer requests for clarification and increased student engagement. Professor Linda Graham is Director of the Centre for Inclusive Education (C4IE) and a Professor in the Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia. Linda is currently Lead Chief Investigator on several externally funded research projects, including the Accessible Assessment Linkage study funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC). She has published more than 100 books, chapters, and journal articles, as well as numerous pieces published in The Conversation. Linda identifies as hearing impaired and is one member of a wonderfully neurodiverse family.
Professor Jill Willis is a founding member of C4IE at QUT. Her research investigates the social structures of assessment and learning spaces to make recommendations for improving teacher and student agency. Jill is proud to have led research on Accessibility in Assessment for Learning and student stories of Thriving in Vertical Schools.
Authors:
Dr Julie Arnold is a Lecturer in Education, specialising in English curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, at QUT. Her current research interests are in accessible assessment practices in secondary schools and reflective inquiry for equity, diversity, and inclusion in higher education.
Professor Christopher DeLuca is an Associate Dean at the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs and Professor in Educational Assessment at the Faculty of Education, Queen’s University (Ontario, Canada). He leads the Classroom Assessment Research Team and is Director of the Queen’s Assessment and Evaluation Group.
Ms Gaenor Dixon is Director, Therapies and Nursing in the Department of Education, Queensland, Australia. As a dual qualified speech language pathologist and teacher, Gaenor has worked in education policy and schools in two Australian states for more than 25 years.
Dr Andrew Gibson is an information scientist researching the relationship between human experience and knowledge through conceptual and computational modelling of complex socio-cognitive systems. He is a Senior Lecturer in Information Science at QUT. Much of his socio-technical work has been applied in the field of learning analytics and includes computational analysis of reflexive expression and metacognition. Previously a secondary teacher of music and music technology, Andrew now teaches postgraduate and undergraduate data analytics.
Dr Callula Killingly is a Postdoctoral Fellow with the C4IE at QUT. Callula’s background is in cognitive psychology. Her research interests include reading development and intervention, and learning and memory processes.
Dr Lara Maia-Pike is a Postdoctoral Fellow with the C4IE at QUT. Lara is a sessional academic in the School of Early Childhood and Inclusive Education and is part of the team that co-designed QUT004, which aims to make university teaching more inclusive.
Professor Naomi Sweller is a Professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. She conducts research in cognitive development, including the use of gesture by both child and adult learners and communicators. She partners extensively with researchers in education, with a focus on development from infancy through to adolescence.
Dr Haley Tancredi (PhD) is a Lecturer (Inclusive Education) at QUT and Program Co-Leader of the Inclusion and Exclusion Program in QUT’s C4IE. Haley is a co-author of Accessible Pedagogies™ and her Doctoral research investigated the impact of this Program of Learning on the experiences and engagement of students with language and/or attentional difficulties.
Associate Professor Sonia White is an Associate Professor in the School of Education, Queensland University of Technology. She has been a teacher and teacher educator, and her research investigates cognitive development and learner processes, particularly visual processes and strategy. Sonia has received research funding from the Australian Research Council and philanthropic organisations.
