Ethan Waters

    PhD Student, School of Mathematical Sciences

    Ethan Waters is a Data Scientist at the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and a PhD student in Mathematical Sciences at QUT, supervised by Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen. His industry-based PhD, conducted in collaboration with DPI, focuses on “Developing Predictive Models and Methods for Time Series with Applications in Primary Industries” and aims to deliver impact in Australia’s primary industries.

    Ethan Waters holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical & Electronics) [Honours] and Bachelor of Science (Data Science) from James Cook University (JCU). Ethan earned the C.N. Barton medal for best Engineering Thesis at JCU and the University Medal for academic excellence. In 2023, Ethan was employed as a Research Engineer at JCU and CSIRO to develop software systems, machine learning algorithms and data processing pipelines with applications in agriculture or marine systems. During this time Ethan served as a Chief Investigator for the Sugar-AI: Smart Sugarcane Health Monitoring Project. In 2024, Ethan was awarded the Mac Hogarth Agriculture Award for the best paper in the agricultural section of the ASSCT Conference by a recent graduate.
