Alex Liu

PhD Candidate, Sports Data Science and AI Next Generation Graduates Program (NGGP)

    • Project Title: Novel Bayesian modelling and advanced inference to infer human hydration state and dynamics
    • Partner Organisation: WearOptimo
    • PhD Student at QUT
    • Supervisors: Associate Professor Paul Wu, Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengerson, Dr. Paula Sanz-Leon

Alex completed his Data Science honours at the University of Sydney in 2025, with a focus on Approximate Bayesian Computation. Having overestimated his athletic capabilities, he realised his talents reside on the sidelines, where he developed a passion in sports analytics. In Sydney, Alex is also a highly regarded maths tutor known for his unique teaching style. Alongside academics, Alex’s deep knowledge in sports, especially the NBA, impresses his many peers.

What made you interested in this program?

Having enjoyed all aspects of my honours project, I believe I was only scratching the surface after it was completed and wanted more. This program will allow me to fill that void with exploration and learning opportunities in a field that I am passionate about. On top of that, the opportunity to crossover stats and sports is too hard to pass up. Being involved with WearOptimo also motivates me to keep pushing myself while gaining invaluable industry experience.

What research question are you looking forward to exploring?

I am most excited in discovering how the effect hydration has on human cognitive and physical performances and using that knowledge to create positive impacts.

    Fun fact about yourself?

I binge basketball role player highlights to recharge my work battery.
