Project Overview & Aims

Infrastructure megaprojects and big-ticket policy programs are crucial to the economic development of cities, states, and the livelihoods of the communities. The challenge is that these projects and policy programs often go off the rails, either with regard to budget, time, or its desired impact.

According to the most recent infrastructure budget announcements (budget), Australia is now in the ‘era’ of mega-projects with more than $125 billion worth of projects and programs underway at the start of 2020. These initiatives need certainty and robustness that they will be completed with minimal disruption and deliver a high return on investment for all stakeholders.

In order to mitigate risk, government and its stakeholders need a robust methodology to measure, monitor, and manage these mega-projects. QUT’s Centre for Data Science along with its collaborators is working on several transformative research projects that sit under the theme of long-term monitoring of mega-projects. The investigators under this research theme will be using data for course corrections, identifying industry collaborations and coordination, and helping provide a long-term vision for future livability.

Our vision is to create a hub that focuses on data science excellence, exploring policy design and evaluation horizons, and advancing cutting-edge research. We aspire to position data science, business statistics, governance, and evaluations as an unparalleled and robust skillset for Australia’s mega-projects.
