Seminar abstract
Feeling licensed or efficacious after a green innovative behavior? – A behavioral spillover perspective on employee-driven green innovations: Employee-driven innovations aimed at conserving natural resources are vital for meeting organizations’ sustainability goals. Studies confirm their effectiveness in reducing organizational carbon footprint. Yet, the impact of such innovations on employees’ future eco-decision making remains underexplored. At the same time, research from environmental psychology and organizational citizenship behavior highlights that an initial pro-environmental behavior affects future green actions. This phenomenon is called behavioral spillover. Thus, engaging in innovative behavior may either enhance the likelihood of adopting subsequent eco-friendly actions (positive spillover) or diminish it (negative spillover). This raises the following questions: Does green innovative behavior strengthen subsequent engagement in pro-environmental behaviors, or does it undermine future pro-environmental behaviors at work? And what psychological factors may drive employees’ future actions?
The talk reports on ongoing work on these questions and presents first empirical insights.
