The Australian government has announced a landmark decision to ban non-compete clauses for millions of workers. This move is expected to enhance job mobility, boost wages, and encourage small business growth. The ban, set to take effect in 2027, will apply to workers earning below the high-income threshold (currently $175K per year).
CDWI researcher Professor Andrew Stewart appeared on ABC News today to discuss the banning of non-compete clauses in Australia, which was announced in the Federal Budget last night.

More on non-compete clauses
This new research by CDWI researchers Paula McDonald and Andrew Stewart, together with Diane van den Broek and Catherine Kennon, sheds important light on the use and impact of non-compete clauses, through a survey of small and medium sized enterprises, as well as interviews with hairdressers and IT professionals – two sectors where restraints are particularly common.
Paula and Andrew discussed some of their research findings in a recent article in The Conversation.
