2022 Research in Focus winners announced

Congratulations to all QUT’s  2022 Research in Focus  competition winners!

‘Keeping It Together’ by Lisa Kearney, has taken out Best in Show Prize.

This is a multi-element map of reef-rock produced using Automated Mineralogy techniques with the Tescan TIMA at QUT CARF. The TIMA simultaneously collects backscattered electron (BSE) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) data, producing large-area maps that can be used to observe samples at varying scales. Like research students, coral reefs are often trying to keep it together, finding support in a unique community that surrounds them.

‘Frozen Fractals All Around’ by Konstantin Faershteyn, has taken QUT Centre for Materials Science Prize.

It a Scanning electron microscopy image of residual NaCl crystallised on Si substrate as a byproduct of Au nanoparticle synthesis. Rapid solidification of salt often results in a characteristic tree-like structure of crystals – dendritic structures. This multi-branching form is also typical for snowflakes or so-called “frozen fractals” as we know from Konstantin’s daughter favourite movie “Frozen”.

Konstantin Faershtein  is Centre for Materials Science investigator. Our congratulation to Konstantin, well deserved prize!
