ARC grant success – Dr Nicola Howell

Nicola Howell

Congratulations to ACHLR’s Dr Nicola Howell who, together with Associate Professor Andrew Schmulow, Professor Jeannie Paterson, Professor Elise Bant, Professor Therese Wilson, Professor Jason Harris, were recently awarded an Australian Research Council Discovery Project.

The project aims to investigate the Treating Customers Fairly regime law (put forward by an Australian Law Reform Commission (Commission) Inquiry into reforming our financial sector legislation), by utilising, for the first time, an internationally comparative critique of existing Treating Customers Fairly regimes in the UK, South Africa and New Zealand. This project will generate new knowledge: a blueprint for adoption into Australia of such a regime, in line with the Commission’s suggested government policy direction. The outcomes include significantly enhanced consumer protection and effective law enforcement. Benefits include a much simplified, more effective law, governing every consumer, and every financial product in Australia.

The 3-year project received $561,156 in funding.

We congratulate Nicola and the project team and look forward to the outcomes of this significant research project.
