Dr Annalese Semmler is a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Pharmacy within QUT’s School of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Health. Her research into genetic and epigenetic profiling for human lung diseases (including cancer) in the early 2000’s led her to develop an interest in pharmacogenomics. This work continued when she established her heart failure research group focusing on understanding the molecular properties of b-adrenoceptors which included determining the extent to which b -adrenoceptor gene variations (polymorphisms) play in the variability of an individual’s drug response. In recent years, Dr Semmler has expanded her pharmacogenomics research to encompass mental health conditions such as refractory depression. Dr Semmler has also had a keen interest in providing education on pharmacogenomics which she has done for more than a decade to Undergraduate Bachelor of Pharmacy students as well as to the wider health professional community through invited speaking roles at conferences. She has recently developed a short online educational course tailored to introducing personalised medicine (and pharmacogenomics) to health professionals which launched through QUTeX in December 2023. She currently has 4 PhD students, two of which work in the pharmacogenomics space.
