
Two Worlds, One Tattoo: Untold stories of non-Indigenous Samoan women and Samoan Fa’afafine with the malu
My creative practice-led research utilises Pasefika framework and filmaking to explore untold stories of non-Indigenous Samoan women and fa’afafine (third gender) who wear the traditional Samoan tatau for women called malu. An entanglement of cultural protocols, religious beliefs, feminism, discrimination and cultural expectation of non-Indigenous Samoan women and fa’afafine with the Samoan malu.
