Boldly Go is a special exhibition at The Cube, showing from the 10th to the 18th of November, as part of the QUT Connections Bold Ideas program launch.
QUT Connections is QUT’s flagship event series that connects you with ground-breaking research and thought leaders.
In Boldy Go, we bring you interactive and large scale displays of some of the newest and most advanced exploration and deep-space imagery ever captured.
Featuring images from the James Webb Space Telescope and Chandra X-Ray Observatory, command the Panorama Navigator to explore the “Cosmic Cliffs” of the Carina Nebula, a fascinating and unimaginably massive region in space where stars are born.
Get a closer look at the Mars Perseverance mission at Van Zyl Overlook through the mission’s highest resolution mosaic ever created. Featuring the PIXL technology developed by researchers from QUT. See an interactive display and chat to Dr David Flannery at the Bold Ideas event, Monday 14 November.
For really far-out viewing, look into Tycho’s Supernova Remnant, locked in ever-expanding shockwave of a long-ago exploded star within the supernova, the remnant is over 12,000 light-years away! Our guest speaker at the Bold Ideas event is Professor Brian Schmidt, astrophysicist and Nobel Prize winner in Physics. Professor Schmidt’s research used these ‘Type Ia Supernovae’ to measure distances, which assisted with determining that the expansion of the universe is actually accelerating.
QUT astrophysicist Dr Michael Cowley, uses data from the telescopes capturing these stunning and ever-curious images, to understand how galaxies first form, how they evolve, and even how they’re influenced by supermassive black holes. Hear Dr Cowley speak at the Bold Ideas event too.
We also bring you the World Wide Telescope, WWT, by the American Astronomical Society. The VISER team at QUT, in collaboration with MOD. at The University of South Australia, have developed a special user interface to bring WWT to the Cube and the MOD. interactive walls.
Fly through the solar system, watch moons orbit in real-time, get up close to planetary surfaces, reveal constellations, and look into images of the most distant galaxies, nebulae, and deep-space phenomena. You’ll be transfixed!
Boldly Go is a special event program at The Cube for QUT Connections but will develop into a permanent exhibit on display from early 2023. If you’re interested in knowing more, please get in touch
