The 3Ps to Walking Safely with dementia – Associate Professor Margaret MacAndrew

Presentation: 20/05/2025

One in five land searches by Queensland police involve a person living with dementia. Up to 70% of people living with dementia will get lost at least once, with many experiencing this multiple times. Males with Alzheimer’s who are independently mobile and have previously become lost are at higher risk. Not all will be found alive and uninjured. The 3Ps (Prepare, Prevent, Prompt Response) approach is a co-designed intervention being trialled in residential care homes to help people living with dementia walk safely. It includes online training to raise awareness, a risk assessment and care planning tool (SWAP tool), and a Missing Person Procedure. Associate Professor Margaret MacAndrew will discuss the development of the 3Ps approach and preview some resources.
