In 2018-2019 the Australian Centre for Evidence Based Aged Care (ACEBAC), La Trobe University, under the auspices of the Australian Hartford Consortium of Gerontological Nursing Excellence (Aus-HCGNE), undertook research to explore curricula content and how care of the older person was taught in Australian undergraduate nursing programs. We found that acute care dominated Australian curricula and few nurse academics had gerontological expertise. Clinical placements ‘with older people’ tended to be undertaken in residential aged care services in the first year of the program. Academics reported that these placements were generally viewed negatively by students who, along with some nurse academics, held ageist views of older people and devalued gerontological nursing. We are currently undertaking research, again with Australian schools of nursing, which focuses on the timing of clinical placements in residential aged care services, the models of supervision used, and the experiences of student nurses and supervisors in these settings.
