Alieh Hajizadeh

Alieh is a PhD researcher in the QUT School of Computer Science, working with the Inclusive Technology Research Team. She is researching co-designing assistive technologies for people with disabilities. Alieh has a background in AI and Natural Language Processing in medical applications

Thesis:“An exploratory study of the contexts, intentions and perceived meanings of image-based communication of systems with people with intellectual disabilities/minimal verbal abilities.”

For her research, she is focusing on assistive communication technologies for people with intellectual disability, with a broader view of connection, self-expression, and group engagement. She is using generic images and image browsers as communication aids and looking for algorithms to facilitate the intent understanding behind using an image for communication.

This project seeks to explore:

  • Co-design solutions to recognize different contexts, potentials, and challenges of using generic images by people with intellectual disabilities for communication.
  • Various algorithms and context information to detect people’s intent for using images in communication, help them to clarify that, and get more realized by their audience when conversing around a wide range of topics.

Through an iterative process of adaptation and change, the outcome of this research will hopefully benefit people with cognitive disabilities and the community toward the development of inclusive communication tools and intelligent interfaces.
