PhD Candidate | Thesis Title: Whose results are these? Counter-mapping relationships between user, place, and targeted content in online maps

This project will take counter-mapping – an approach from critical cartography that has been used to create alternative narratives in cases where knowledge and/or power asymmetries exist between a map’s creator(s) and its user(s) – and apply them to the mapping products produced by Google, Bing, and Apple. It will gather data to visualise the relationships between user, place, and targeted content – specifically ads and search results – in order to highlight, characterise and critique the algorithmic processes that might drive such targeting.
