
In this DMRC hosted seminar, world leading as well as emerging music industry researchers will present their work on the economics of music. Professor Peter Tschmuck will give an overview of the economics of music based on his most recent book with the same name. This will be followed by a presentation about one of the world’s most digitised music economies – Norway, by Dr Daniel Nordgård – followed by a presentation on the emerging music economy in Myanmar, by QUT PhD researcher Mr Bondy Valdovinos Kaye. Finally, Professor Patrik Wikström will discuss his work on the impact of digitisation on music listener behaviour and acoustic diversity.
Peter Tschmuck is Professor for Cultural Institutions Studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He also teaches courses at the University of Economics and Business Administration in Vienna, at the Danube- University in Krems, the University of Music, Drama and Media in Hanover, and at the Zeneipari Hivatal in Budapest. His books include Creativity and Innovation in the Music Industry (2nd edn, 2012) and Music Business and the Experience Economy (2013). He is Editor of the International Journal of Music Business Research.
Daniel Nordgård teaches music business in the master’s program of Music Management at the University of Agder, Norway and researches the international music industries and specifically digital disruption within these industries. He has recently completed his doctoral dissertation “Determining Factors on Digital Change in the Music Industries”. Nordgård led the government-appointed Nordgård committee in 2013, which released a comprehensive report on the Norwegian streaming market last year. Nordgård has previously been active in the music industries as a concert promoter in Kristiansand. Specifically, he promoted the Quart Festival. In addition to his academic work, Nordgård serves on a number of boards and committees, nationally and internationally.
D. Bondy Valdovinos Kaye is a PhD student at Queensland University of Technology currently examining copyright policy and digital music in South-east Asia. He is also the Editorial Assistant for Media Industries Journal and holds a Master of Science in Mass Communications from Kansas State University.
Patrik Wikström is Professor and Head of the School of Communication at QUT and Chief Investigator at QUT Digital Media Research Centre. Prof Wikström uses and develops computational methods to examine the dynamics and regulatory challenges of networked markets, with a particular focus on markets for cultural products. He has published extensively on the digital transformation of the music economy, including books such as ‘The Music Industry: Music in the Cloud’ (Polity Press) and ‘Business Innovation and Disruption in the Music Industry’. He is currently leading a research project focused on how enhanced access to large and detailed datasets on music usage is reshaping the music economy.
