The DMRC is proud to be partnering with Open Data Institute Queensland to deliver two workshops as part of their 2017 training program.
Analysing and Visualising Geospatial Data (Dr Peta Mitchell) – 26 May
Spatial information, or geodata, is a rapidly growing subset of big data. This workshop will focus on the challenges and opportunities for business, public administration, and researchers in relation to accessing, analysing, and visualising spatial information, with a focus on social media data.
The workshop will provide a practical introduction to using the web-based mapping platform Carto to visualise and spatially analyse geodata. The ethics and limitations of dealing with geosocial data will also be explored. Further details and info about how to sign up at the ODI Queensland website.
Advanced Social Media Analytics (Prof Axel Bruns) – 18 July
This data analytics and visualisation workshop focuses on a number of emerging standard tools and methods for large-scale data analytics, using Twitter data to illustrate these approaches.
When working with large social media datasets, quantitative and mixed-methods approaches that draw especially on visual representations of ‘big data’ have become an indispensable part of the the analytics process.
Participants will be introduced to the open-source Twitter Capture and Analysis Toolkit (TCAT) (a capable and reliable tool for data gathering from the Twitter API), as well as Tableau as a high-end data analytics software for processing and visualising large datasets.
Skills gained in this workshop will transfer well to working with other large datasets from social media and other sources. More details and info about how to sign up at the ODI Queensland website.
