There and Back Again: An Examination of Experience, Connection, and Performance in Digital Games Across 13,059 Kilometres
Dr Madison Klarkowski
Postdoctoral Fellow, Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child, QUT
Abstract:
Digital games represent a ubiquitous element of contemporary life, with 81% of Australians routinely playing them—and accordingly being subject to the vast array of experiences they offer. However, it is in this variety of players and experiences that surprising differences in digital play emerge. In this seminar, Dr. Madison Klarkowski recounts her research journey (across a difference of 80 degrees Celsius) investigating the varied perspectives and experiences of digital play: the physiological, the social, and the unique manifestation of performance in professional-level play.
Bio
Dr. Madison Klarkowski is an expert digital games researcher who focuses on the player experience of videogames, supporting and facilitating performance in esports, games for social connectedness, and identifying the physiological markers of experiential phenomena. To this end, she draws from expertise on a wealth of methodologies and analyses—such as experiment design, mixed-methods assessment, and physiological evaluation—to support her research. As a new postdoctoral fellow for the Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child, Madison’s recent contributions to the digital games space include the consideration of positive play outcomes for children, and an understanding of how children experience and enjoy digital play.
