Co-Designing Legowo-Informed Tangible Interactions to Support the Mental Wellbeing of Indonesian Students in Australia

Agata Filiana
PhD Student at QUT Digital Wellbeing Lab

Abstract

Discussions on mental health can often be difficult for international university students, particularly for those from cultures with strong collectivist values, as this topic carries negative connotations and stigma. Tangible interactions within Human Computer Interaction (HCI) have been used in different ways to support mental health and wellbeing, such as to support emotion expression through creative processes. This can be beneficial, particularly for those having difficulties in expressing their emotions. Interacting with tangible objects also allows users to purposely slow down and encourage self-reflection.

This study focuses on Indonesian international students and uses a co-design approach to explore tangible interactions based on the Javanese concept of legowo (whole-hearted acceptance) and inform the design of novel technologies to support their mental wellbeing. There are three stages to this research: exploring shared cultural values, co-design workshops and prototyping based on the “magic machine” approach, and investigating how tangible interactions could support mental wellbeing in everyday life. This study contributes to the call for more diverse and inclusive mental health technologies that can cater to underrepresented communities by highlighting the lived experiences of international students from Indonesia.
