Dr Jeremy Kerr is a Senior Lecturer in Visual Communication at the School of Design and he is Program Leader for Design for Health in the QUT Design Lab. His research focus is the exploration and development of design and design methods to advance community capacity building and self-advocacy. Central to his work is applying co-design methodologies to foster collaboration and to include the authentic voice and creative input of stakeholders in solutions. He has worked extensively with community and government organisations and with health services to develop and apply co-design frameworks and approaches, with a specialisation in trauma-informed and healing-centred methods. His research projects include design-led initiatives in the areas of mental health and well-being, informal and formal education, children’s health, intercultural communication, and with the disability sector.

His role also entails leading the integration of co-design across the centre’s 3 signature projects, Feeding Families in Tough Times, #SchoolFoodies, and Responsive Feeding in Tough Times. As well, he is currently collaborating with Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service (CHQ), developing a co-design framework and learning resource for use in the improvement and development of its state-based services and operations in coming years.
Previously, Jeremy has led the co-design component of research projects with CARE International (based in Papua New Guinea), the Autism CRC, Bravehearts, Education Queensland, Sadhana (human rights organisation, based in India), Shikshangram Shelter for Children (based in India) and the Australian Red Cross, amongst other organisations. His work with Autism CRC entailed a co-design collaboration with young people on the autism spectrum in the design of a digital platform to support diverse learners, producing a highly-acclaimed and accredited international resource, inclusionED.
Jeremy is a member of the Bravehearts Executive Research Advisory Panel, QUT School of Design Research Advisory Group and Metro North Health Co-design Community of Practice. He currently supervises postgraduate students in areas including playful co-design, health education design, service design, design and well-being, and co-designing with neurodiverse children and youth.
