In the news: Bridge Program welcomes seventh cohort of researchers and entrepreneurs

The QUT-administered Bridge Program, the successful Australian pharmaceutical commercialisation training program, has launched its seventh cohort of welcoming 100 new researchers and entrepreneurs looking to accelerate their commercialisation journey.

The Bridge Program is a unique professional development program backed by government and industry, focused on equipping Australia’s best researchers with the knowledge, skills and networks needed to commercialise new pharmaceutical products.

The program aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry in pharmaceutical and medical research, a key issue that is continually identified as holding the sector back.

Director of the Bridge Program Professor Lyn Griffiths said the program highlighted the importance of academic researchers working with industry to translate medical research through commercialisation.

“The Bridge Program is a key factor in enabling training, networks and collaboration to strengthen the sector through these linkages around Australia,” Professor Griffiths said.

Global biopharmaceutical company Amgen hosted the Bridge Program’s annual kick-off event, as Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic welcomed biotech and industry leaders, as well as the newly selected cohort, from around the country to their Sydney headquarters.

The group comprises 100 competitively selected participants from around Australia who will embark on a year-long program delivered via online training materials as well as a series of face-to-face events, activities and seminars.

Amgen has been a foundational partner of the program since its inception in 2017, recognising its potential to improve the health and lives of Australians in the future.

Covering the scientific, legal, financial, clinical, regulatory and reimbursement elements of the commercialisation process, the Bridge Program benefits from a consortium of leading partners including AbbVie, Amgen, Australian National University, Pfizer, Roche, Spruson & Ferguson, CSIRO, University of New South Wales, University of Western Australia and the Government of Western Australia.

The program is supported by the Federal Government through MTPConnect, with industry-matched funding from consortium members.

“Amgen is honoured to host the launch of this year’s Bridge Program and to have welcomed Minister Husic, the 2023 Bridge Program participants and industry partners to our Sydney office for this important event,” said Gabi Mittas, Managing Director of Amgen Australia.

“We are proud to have been supporting this program for the past seven years, and importantly to help facilitate the pathway for the future innovators of our industry,” she added.

Amgen Australia’s Managing Director, Gabi Mittas; MTPConnect’s CEO, Stuart Dignam; QUT’s Distinguished Professor, Lyn Griffiths; Amgen Australia’s Head of Government Affairs, Dr David Thomson and Pfizer’s Executive Director & Emerging Science Lead (Asia & Asia Pacific) Dr Anand Gautam, also joined the Minister as key speakers and welcomed the seventh cohort of the program.
