Gonçalo da Costa

PhD Student, QUT

Currently developing his PhD project, Goncalo has completed his bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology and his masters in Neuroscience. Has worked in Alzheimer’s and brain injury research but also extensively in the diving and conservation industries where he managed a seagrass conservation project in Cambodia. His PhD project will combine the fields of marine, material, and biomedical sciences to investigate biomechanical properties and regenerative capacity of chondrichthyan cartilage. Specifically, his PhD project will 1) characterise the histo-morphological structure, biophysical properties, and molecular makeup of native hyaline cartilage in the Port-Jackson shark, and 2) assess its capacity to repair following injury, spontaneously and scaffold-guided. The proposed approach will help to unravel key repair mechanisms, establishing the baseline knowledge that could be used for future translational research in cartilage tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
