Getting to and around Coimbra

The closest airports to Coimbra are Lisbon (190km) and Porto (120km).  While Porto is slightly closer, Lisbon may be more convenient if catching the train. There are frequent high-speed trains connecting both cities with Coimbra (please ensure you book the station Coimbra B). The train from Lisbon departs from the Lisboa – Oriente station, three stops from the airport on the Metro (Metro tickets available at the station). The official booking site is https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/en/train-times.

Accommodation Options

For those who wish to stay in a boutique hotel close to the main campus of Coimbra University (Faculty of Economics is approximately a 25 minute walk) and experience the old town of Coimbra, the Sapienta, located in Alta (high town) is offering a discount to us on their non-refundable rate. Please use the code ‘TAX22’ when booking to receive the discount.

Depending on budget and wish list, there are many other options. The Meliá-affiliated hotel is the most convenient (within walking distance) for the conference location at the Faculty of Economics. The Faculty, though, is some way from the historical centre of Coimbra at the base of (‘Baixa’ or low town), and along the side of a hill at the top of which (‘Alta’ or high town) sits the central campus of the university. It’s about a 20-25 minute walk from the Faculty of Economics to the main campus.

No doubt people will want to see the historical parts of Coimbra where we will have social events so some of you may want to stay in that part of town rather than next to the Faculty (the trade-off being a potential taxi ride in the morning rather than the evening).

In the historical part of town itself (Baixa and Alta), there are many smaller hotels/pensions.  In Baixa, at the foot of the hill and overlooking the river is the Hotel Astoria. A bit further along the river is an Ibis while in the other direction is a couple of fancier hotels part of large chains: the Tivoli and the Vila Galé.

There are many others as well, and Tripadvisor and other sites can help navigate the options.
