QUT's Digital Media Research Centre Tackles AI at Woodford

On Friday 29 December, the DMRC panel AI and Society featured at the Evergreens at Woodford Folk Festival. The session successfully captured the audience’s attention, fostering a thought-provoking dialogue on the challenges and opportunities presented by AI decision-making in various sectors.

Moderated by DMRC Director  Professor Dan Angus, panellists included Distinguished Professor Jean Burgess, Associate Director of the national ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, Dr Aleesha Rodriguez, and PhD student Daniel Whelan-Shamy.

The panel delved deep into the profound impact of automation, specifically exploring generative AI, algorithmic advertising, banking, government systems, retail, and education.

Distinguished Professor Burgess emphasised the growing significance of the discussion, stating, “The impact of automation in our daily lives is immense. It’s a discussion that’s increasingly important.”

Participation by an engaged and diverse audience, reflected a shared interest in understanding the ethical and social implications of AI advancements. Through a series of compelling case studies and diverse viewpoints, the hundred’s of attendees gained a comprehensive understanding of how AI is transforming the fabric of our daily lives.

Being the DMRC’s second year participating in discussions at the Woodford Folk Festival, showcases the DMRC’s commitment to addressing pertinent issues at the intersection of technology and society.
