NSTSS Teachers and NYSF Students Visit QUT CLVOL in January 2018

On the 7th January, the Contact Lens and Visual Optics Lab (CLVOL) hosted 36 secondary school teachers from the National Science Teachers Summer School (NSTSS); and later that same week on Friday, 12th January, the lab hosted 45 high school students from the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). The NSTSS and NYSF have provided science programs for students and teachers for many years, however, this has been the first year that both programs have been conducted in Queensland; and QUT’s CLVOL was delighted to be part of a program that encourages teachers and students to be excited about science, and especially passionate about health science disciplines such as optometry and vision science.

CLVOL was exceedingly proud in showcasing the lab’s research facilities and set about engaging the visiting teachers and visiting students in 11 different workstations. The lab ensured that these workstations were thought-provoking, interactive and meaningful. Teachers and students were afforded the opportunity to rotate through every workstation, which  included  learning activities about: eye tracking, wavelength of light, thermal imaging of the eye, colour vision, binocular vision/stereoacuity, contact lenses, tear film stability, visual acuity and blur, anatomy of the anterior eye (slit lamp), anatomy of the posterior eye (OCT), and also lenses and adaptive optics.
