In 2018, seven medical areas have received research funding from the Rebecca Lillian Cooper Medical Research Foundation; These areas are: Brain Sciences: Psychiatry and Neurology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Lung Disease, Rheumatology and Vision Sciences. The foundation supports early-career researchers, with the specific objective of advancing, promoting and encouraging medical research in Australia.
Congratulations to CLVOL’s Dr David Alonso-Caneiro who is the proud recipient of a 2018 Rebecca Lillian Cooper Medical Research Foundation – Vision Sciences Award. This award ($100,000 AUD) will go a long way to supporting Dr Alonso-Caneiro’s research on artificial intelligence for image processing in ocular imaging in health and disease, during 2018 and 2019. Further to the R L Cooper Medical Research Foundation grant, Dr Alonso-Caneiro also received the Kevin Cahill Award; – an accolade awarded to the most interesting and/or innovative project grant application in the field of vision sciences.
Dr Alonso-Caneiro is excited about the advances and improvements that he hopes to achieve in developing novel OCT image analysis techniques using machine learning methodologies. During his research, Dr Alonso-Caneiro will be mentored by fellow CLVOL colleague, Associate Professor Scott Read, as well as by external collaborator and ophthalmologist, Dr Fred K Chen (MD) from The University of Western Australia, Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science (Lions Eye Institute).
