Celebrating Mark’s Biofabulous Achievements at QUT

This week, we’re celebrating Mark’s incredible achievements during his time as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at QUT over the last 3 years before he transitions to an exciting new role as a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at the University of Queensland.

Mark joined the Biofabrication & Tissue Morphology group, under Prof Mia Woodruff’s supervision, in March 2018 after completing his PhD at Imperial College London, UK. Within his first year, he secured an Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship and rapidly grew his research team, expanding into an exciting portfolio of research in biofabrication, tissue engineering and medical imaging.

Mark has published more than 20 articles with a focus on advanced biomedical image analysis, and computational modelling. He has also been awarded more than $1M of funding as chief investigator across 14 competitive funding rounds, he is the principal supervisor of 3 PhD and 1 MPhil students, and he co-supervises 7 PhD students. Mark is also the keynote speaker of the bioprocess engineering and automation track of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS), and in 2020 won his department’s Early Career Researcher Award. Mark was also the supervisor for the winning team for the Bionics Queensland Challenge 2020, led by his students, Trent, Cody & Sabrina (pictured below).

Mark has been an invaluable member of the Biofabrication & Tissue Morphology Group, not only in his exceptional contribution to the team as a researcher and supervisor, but also as a mentor and friend. It’s been a privilege to have Mark in the team and his impact in the team will be longstanding. Mark has been a vibrant member of our local research communities, including in the School of Mechanical, Medical & Process Engineering in service roles such as a member of the Research subgroup, as well as in the Centre of Biomedical Technologies and Australasian Society for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering.

We wish Mark all the very best for this exciting new step in his career and we’re proud of his amazing achievement in securing a Senior Lecturer role in at the University of Queensland. Mark has an incredible track record of achievement in academia and is on an exciting trajectory as a research leader in biomedical image analysis and computational modelling. We look forward to continuing a strong collaboration with Mark and his new team at UQ and wish him all the best for the future!
