The English Teachers Association of Queensland (ETAQ) very first episode of Hoops of Steel has dropped on Apple, Spotify and all the other places!
The Hoops of Steel podcast is a space where English teachers in Queensland and beyond can connect about the joy and point of learning, language, and literature. We invite you all into our new community, where English teachers in Queensland and beyond can connect about the joy and point of learning, language, and literature. Each month, Julie Arnold interviews an educator who’s navigating a challenge we can all relate to. In February, she spoke with Melanie Ralph of Bare Bones teaching fame. Mel is a teacher who believes keeping things simple is the key to creating a joyful classroom. Her values-driven, pragmatic approach is great for students; and it can help teachers hold onto the joy and the point of learning in English.
In recent years, the landscape of education has evolved dramatically, accelerated locally by shifts in curriculum and assessment policy and globally by rapid social and technological ‘advances’. Amidst these changes, the intrinsic value of language and literature for personal and intellectual growth remains central to our practice in the English classroom. Each episode of Hoops of Steel explores an engaging idea or pressing challenge for English teachers. The series features deep-dive conversations with educators who navigate the tension between accountability and inspiration, finding ways to teach and lead with joy and purpose.

What’s with the title? In Act I, scene iii of Hamlet, Polonius is farewelling his son Laertes, who is bound for university in Paris. The advice he offers is ironic in the context, but generally excellent: “Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, / Grapple them unto thy soule with hoopes of steele”. Hoops of Steel is a space for English teacher friends to connect about our work in the classroom.
