Project dates: 2023 - Ongoing
This project aims to develop next-generation arterial performance indicators to support smarter, multimodal traffic operations aligned with TMR’s policy directions and network optimisation objectives. Currently, TMR evaluates arterial network performance using data from loop detectors via the STREAMS platform, deriving measures such as speed, Level of Service (LOS), and Network Performance Indicators (NPIs). Recent advances in connected vehicle technologies, the availability of high-resolution traffic data from detectors, and advanced data analytics provide new opportunities to enhance existing performance monitoring frameworks. Globally, the past decade has seen significant progress in developing new arterial performance measures that quantify various aspects of network performance using diverse data sources to provide a more comprehensive understanding of arterial operations. However, their application within Queensland’s arterial network, and more broadly across Australian jurisdictions, remains limited and not well understood. This project aims to address that gap by exploring how these emerging datasets and indicators can be adapted and applied in Queensland to deliver more comprehensive data-driven performance insights.
