Beyond the commute: Reimagining Australian CBD travel in a post-pandemic world

Project dates: 02/05/2024 - Ongoing

This project investigate sustained change in Australian CBD commuter travel patterns after Covid-19 and new ways of working, and provide evidence-based recommendations for planning, policy, investment and management of transport and land use infrastructure. CBD commute travel patterns underpin significant government planning, policy and investment in transport infrastructure directed at reducing commute congestion. Meanwhile there is significant public and private land use investment in CBDs. As these activities create long-term commitments there is serious risk that they could create sweated or stranded assets. The extent of changes to CBD commute travel patterns after Covid-19 and new ways of working will be quantified. Government and industry responses will be evaluated. Expert actors will be surveyed and views/perceptions used to develop a logical framework. Travel behaviour theory will be developed and recommendations made to better inform forward planning, policy and investment responses.
