Circular Case Study – Practice Studio

Independent fashion boutique and cultural hub

Founded in 2019 by Queensland University of Technology graduate Kat Walsh, Practice Studio is an independent fashion boutique and gallery located in West End. Combining an alterations service, workroom and retail space, it champions emerging and alternative designers while fostering a culture of thoughtfully designed, independent fashion in Brisbane.

Core Business

Practice Studio offers a curated selection of clothing, jewelry, and accessories from independent small and micro businesses operating outside the traditional fashion calendar. While founded to promote sustainable and ethical fashion, its in-store alteration service has become central, creating a symbiotic relationship with the retail arm. Kat Walsh believes the two services contextualize each other attracting customers who return for both. The alteration service also supports the business during slower retail periods, while the visible workroom fosters transparency, encouraging deeper connections with thoughtfully crafted garments.

Many of the designers stocked by Practice Studio employ circular strategies: many of the clothes from brands Bulley Bulley and Katalyst  are made from deadstock fabric and Clingy bags are designed entirely from repurposed materials except for the (organic cotton) tags and linings (R2 – Reduce). Bugdumb, You Took Your Time and Chronic Bone make garments by applying fresh print work to secondhand t-shirts (R5 – Refurbish).
