National Bowel Cancer Screening for people with a disability
Princess Alexandra Hospital, Metro South Hospital and Health Services
The Health Equity and Access Team (HEAT) and the Department of Gastroenterology, Princess Alexandra Hospital in partnership with Queensland Disability Network (QDN) are conducting the first Australian study on personal lived experiences, and the empirical evidence behind barriers, enablers, plus support needs for people with a disability and their carers when accessing the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP), and participation across both Phase 1 (FOBT kit completion) and Phase 2 (follow-up colonoscopy). Using photovoice, the 25 participants representing 5 disability subgroups will take photographs documenting their personal lived experiences. The subsequent public exhibition will trigger a reflective dialogue on how best to increase NBCSP participation for disability communities.
