Laura Milton is a third-year PhD student at the Centre for Biomedical Technologies, working in the Micro Tissue Engineering Laboratory. Laura graduated as Valedictorian of the University of Queensland’s School of Biomedical Sciences following her undergraduate study of a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Hons I). She then turned to a biomedical engineering PhD at QUT to address challenges she faced in her undergraduate studies regarding a lack of predictive, reproducible, and effective pre-clinical drug testing models. She now generates novel tissue-specific biomaterials through her industry alignment with Gelomics Pty Ltd, and partners these with 3D-printed microfluidic organ-on-a-chip devices to fabricate preclinical drug testing models comprising breast cancer cells and liver cells. She hopes to contribute to better modelling of physiological systems in health and disease, decreasing the burden on clinical trial participants and streamlining the drug discovery and testing pipeline.
