Custom mattresses for children undergoing spinal surgery

Associate Professor Paige Little

is an award-winning pioneer in developing technology to produce bespoke theatre mattresses for patients undergoing lengthy and complex spinal surgeries. These patients must lie for extended periods in positions that put pressure on vital organs and soft tissues, which for some patients with atypical anatomy risks injury or co-morbidities due to loading on vital organs and increased risk of soft tissue injury, which can lead to permanent damage. Dr Little translated her imaging and biomechanical simulation technology into an innovative digital workflow that designs custom mattresses that exactly fit patients’ individual torso anatomy, distributing their weight evenly and reducing the risks associated with tissue death. The mattresses, manufactured by industry partner Sealy Australia, have been successfully used in the surgeries of 20 spinal surgery patients at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.
