Professor Olivier Salvado
is a leader of integrating artificial intelligence within healthcare. Currently Professor of AI at QUT, he previously spearheaded a $25M initiative advancing AI projects across CSIRO. Professor Salvado has significantly contributed to medical image analysis in major clinical studies, notably through the Australian Dementia Network, where his advances could improve the early diagnosis and prediction of dementia. Professor Salvado applied advanced machine learning techniques to MRI and PET scans, developing new approaches for analysing these images with a focus on detecting and understanding neurodegenerative diseases. For example, he demonstrated that cerebral microbleeds – important biomarkers of dementia and other brain diseases – could be detected by analytical models trained on synthetic data, overcoming the challenge of training models on real patient data when such biomarkers occur infrequently.
