Professor Zhiyong Li
is developing new tools to detect blood flow patterns and vessel deformation in people with cardiovascular disease. Many cardiovascular conditions, such as coronary artery disease and stroke, are driven by plaque or aneurysm rupture in the arteries, which is due in-part to the biomechanical forces exerted on blood-vessel walls. Professor Li develops a variety of methods including medical imaging and computational modelling to understand the biomechanics of blood flow that lead to plaque/aneurysm rupture. He is building point-of-care technology that will predict which patients are at risk of plaque/aneurysm rupture, enhancing the ability of clinicians to diagnose and monitor these patients, and ultimately to help prevent these conditions through early intervention.
