Cardiovascular system models

Professor Yi-Chin Toh

is developing more accurate models of the human cardiovascular system using advanced biofabrication techniques. Current cardiovascular drug testing methods often rely on animal models, which have fundamental biological differences to human physiology. One major challenge in developing human tissue models is replicating the complexity of blood-vessel architecture, which is freestanding, fluid-carrying, multi-layered, and branching. In collaboration with CBT’s Professor Zhiyong Li and Singaporean researchers, Professor Toh has created a technique that allows the direct 3D printing of a patient-specific carotid artery model. This artery transports oxygenated blood from the heart to the brain, neck and face; a build-up of plaque in this artery can thus increase the risk of stroke. This model is enabling the researchers to investigate how blood-flow dynamics can contribute to the development and progression of plaque build-up.
