AI-based 3D scanning and analysis technologies

Professor Mia Woodruff and Dr Sean Powell

have developed and patented a world-first 4D scanning technology to enable instantaneous and high frame rate (static and motion) multispectral 3D scanning and AI computer vision technology. Their first device, MultiScan4D, is being commercialised by spin-out company Aptium.ai. This handheld battery powered 3D scanner can instantly capture static and moving objects with the press of a button. Combined with their cloud-computing platform, podiatrists have a “one-stop-shop” to rapidly scan, model and print customised orthoses, and can help diagnose and treat serious lower limb and foot conditions such as diabetic foot ulcers. Their technology also has wide applications beyond podiatry such as hospital (e.g. pre & post-surgery planning), sports medicine, human movement studies, and industrial applications such as automated optical inspection and production line monitoring for manufacturing plants.
