Long Term Treatment with Azithromycin to Prevent Bronchiectasis and Recurrent Cough

Study title:

Randomised parallel, multicentre, unblinded RCT (with concealed 1:1 allocation) and a cohort study.

What study is about:

This study is investigating if 9 months of azithromycin can prevent recurrent episodes of wet cough and/or future bronchiectasis or asthma.

Main Aims:

  1. In children with CWC suspected of having PBB and high-risk traits, can 9 months of azithromycin (compared to no regular azithromycin treatment) reduce future recurrent PBB and/or BE.
  2. Does 9 months of regular azithromycin: improve QOL, lung function, time to next exacerbation, time to recurrent PBB and BE diagnosis, recurrence rate, cost effectiveness and time off school. Also, can baseline multi-omics predict future BE or asthma by 24 months.
