Michael has been a member of the School of Information Systems, and of the Business Process Management Group within the school, since 2000. For more than a decade, Michael has been the chief Researcher and Architect of the open source business process management system system YAWL, which is unique within the field for its near-complete coverage of the full range of workflow patterns. He has authored more than 60 journal and conference articles, and co-edited the book Modern Business Process Automation: YAWL and its support environment (2010, Springer). Michael’s research interests include Process Automation, Flexibility and Adaptation, BPM / blockchain integration, and Activity Theory.

Real World Engagement
Michael has supported industry partners in the deployment of business process management solutions, including first:utility in the UK and Cavulus in the US. More recently, Michael worked with members of the Creative Industries Faculty and the local publisher Tiny Owl to help deliver a blockchain-based solution for book publishing royalties and payments.
