YuMi Deadly Maths (YDM) is designed to enhance mathematics learning outcomes, improve participation in higher mathematics subjects and tertiary courses, and improve employment and life chances.
The set of eight YDM books below describe the YDM approach and pedagogical framework for Prep (Foundation) to Year 9. A further three supplementary YDM books cover the big ideas of mathematics, problem solving in mathematics, and literacy in mathematics.
These resources were originally developed as part of the Teaching Indigenous Mathematics Education (TIME) project funded by the Queensland Department of Education and Training from 2010 to 2012. The YuMi Deadly Centre acknowledges the Department’s role in the development of YDM and in funding the earlier versions of these resources.
Two Maths Fiesta books are also included on this page. These were developed in 2014 for North Lakes State College in Brisbane and provide ideas for running Maths Fiesta days for Foundation to Year 9 students.
YDM resource books
Covers the beliefs that underpin YDM; the YDM philosophy and pedagogy; cultural implications; relationships to whole school change and leadership; and implementation of YDM in schools (including integration with existing programs).
Covers number basics; whole number numeration; decimal number numeration; common fraction numeration; and percent, rate and ratio. Overviews the mathematics and describes classroom activities for Foundation to Year 9.
Covers addition and subtraction of integers; multiplication and division of integers; the four operations with common and decimal fractions; and operation applications with percent, rate and ratio. Includes concepts, principles, strategies, computation, problem solving and extension to algebra. Overviews the mathematics and describes classroom activities for Foundation to Year 9.
Covers repeating and growing patterns; change and functions; equivalence and equations; and principles of arithmetic and algebra. YDM supplementary resource books
An introductory book about the ‘big ideas’ of mathematics that underpin the YDM pedagogy in all year levels. Describes big ideas in five categories: global, concept, principle, strategy and pedagogy.
Identifies six components of problem-solving skill (metacognition, thinking skills, plans, strategies, content knowledge and affective traits). Describes these components and how they relate to problem types. Proposes a scope and sequence to teach the components across Foundation to Year 9.
Focuses on an aspect of mathematics teaching and learning that is part of all topics, namely literacy. Discusses how literacy is different in mathematics, identifies six components of literacy in mathematics, and describes these components and how they relate to each other. Proposes a scope and sequence to teach the components across Foundation to Year 12.
YDM Maths Fiesta books
