For more information on how we collected and analysed our data and the outcomes of this project, see our co-authored report, the article Marginalised young people, their teacher and a researcher working and learning together (Publications section), and the documentary film.
Mini project #1: A Deadly Learning SpaceRationale: Despite Indigenous students being enrolled at The ALC, there is currently no recognition or representation of the Indigenous culture. We are endeavouring to change this narrative by incorporating a range of learning activities, including, but not limited to, participation in nation-wide events and artworks. The outcomes of this mini project included writing an Acknowledgement of Country for the program, and creating artworks, including one which combines the program’s logo and a gathering circle.

Mini project #2: The YarnRationale: An outdoor learning space is an important part of students’ learning and engagement. This is because taking a breath of fresh air and being in a constant natural environment can be stimulating for the brain and assist the body in releasing a range ‘happiness’ chemicals. The outcomes of this mini project included planning a new outdoor space and the construction of a new concrete pathway, which also involved forging new working partnerships.

Mini project #3: The ALC Learning SpaceRationale: The working environment is an important part of student and teacher learning and engagement. This is because it can change how students engage with their work and give them more access to do their work with learning equipment. It can also be used to help cater for those with diverse needs in the group or learning environment. We found that in The ALC there were more students who said they were more comfortable than uncomfortable within the learning space but there is room for improvement. The outcomes of this mini project included the purchase of additional furniture and funding of a capital works project to connect the building to the school’s water supply.

Mini project #4: Maintaining Acceptable Noise Levels in The ALCNoise is an important part of students’ and teachers’ learning and working environment. Research suggests that high noise levels have a significant negative effect on students’ and teachers’ mental health and well-being, as well as motivation and attention. This causes stress and fatigue. We found that noise can be a problem in the ALC, as loud noise makes students and the teacher feel uncomfortable and stressed, which can make it hard for everyone to get their work done. Outcomes of this project included implementing a ‘Quiet Time’ after lunch each day and using the ‘Bouncy Balls’ app for the class to self-monitor noise levels |
