Digital preservation of Queensland Museum artifacts

Digital preservation and presentation of environmentally sensitive artifacts using best-practice photogrammetry and motion tracking.

As part of a joint appointment with Queensland Museum Network, QUT Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice faculty researcher Dr David Pyle is exploring techniques to advance the digital preservation and presentation of environmentally sensitive artefacts and specimens from the state collection using best-practice photogrammetry and other 3D scanning techniques. With 1.7 million items in the collection, the application of multi-camera rigs and their potential to dramatically speed up the digitisation process is an important aspect of the work. Another promising area of exploration is the use of state-of-the-art game-engine technology to display super high-resolution 3D models for scientific research and public engagement.
