In the wastewater treatment plant operated by the Gold Coast City Council, waste-activated sludge generated from the treatment process undergoes anaerobic digestion in the digesters. The residual sludge from the anaerobic digesters is dewatered through belt filter presses. The operation of belt filter presses has been affected by solids precipitating in the units, causing tracking issues and increasing the need to be taken offline for maintenance.
