Waste to Resource: Synthesis of high-quality zeolites from waste alum sludge generated in the water treatment industry

Water treatment industry produces large volumes of ‘Alum Sludge’ as a waste product.  This sludge is usually disposed by sending to controlled landfills.  With increasing transport and disposal costs combined with landfill scarcity, the management of waste alum sludge has become a problem for the water industry. The research is aiming to develop a feasible “green” technology to convert waste alum sludge into a high value product, namely zeolite. Due to high pollutant removal characteristics, zeolites can be locally used as a selective ion-exchange material (for instance, as a water softener) within the water treatment industry.
